<span style="font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">What can I say about this year’s <a href="http://www.midnightrun.ch/cms/" target="_blank">Midnight Run</a>? Not much
changes from <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2012/12/2012-christmas-midnight-run.html" target="_blank">year</a> to <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2011/12/2011-midnight-run.html" target="_blank">year</a> to <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2010/12/christmas-midnight-run-2010.html" target="_blank">year</a>… Here’s what has changed; it's getting more
competitive. As younger runners join the 50+ age group, it’s harder to earn a
spot on the podium. I ran my heart out and was thrilled to end up in third place. At least one
woman who beat me at l’Escalade the previous Saturday finished a minute behind
me. Another change was the decision to do away with the 50+ awards ceremony.
Bummer! We hung around for nothing. I got my trophy in the mail today. The trophy has
changed too. Even though it won't match the previous five, I think it’s prettier!</span>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The weather was perfect for this year’s <a href="http://live.escalade.ch/" target="_blank">Escalade</a>. I got to the Bastions
in Geneva in time to see C. run his race. I cheered for him on each of his
three laps, but he was so focused that he never saw me. I then made my way to
the starting line where I joined 650 other ladies running the <a href="http://www.lemanbleu.ch/vod/course-de-lescalade-2013-08122013-18" target="_blank">women’s masters race</a>. I got close enough to the front to avoid getting stuck behind slow
runners, but not too close to hinder faster runners. The pace was fast from the
start. Most of the races I enter are 10Ks, so a 5K is not a distance I’m used
to. Besides that, my Garmin had given out on me earlier in the week. I didn’t
know how I was doing except in comparison to other women I recognized. When S.,
with whom I had been chatting during the men’s masters race, passed me as we
started the second lap, I was determined not to let her get out of my sight.
Other than the times she went around corners in the old city, I was able to do
just that. The pictures and finisher’s clip below attest to that.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">I don’t usually have to run tactically. I can size up the field before a
local race and know who will finish 2 or 3 minutes ahead of me, and who will
finish a few minutes behind me. The <a href="http://atraversprilly.ch/" target="_blank">Prilly race</a>, a week ago last Saturday, consisted
of a one mile loop through town that we were to run five times (keep track of
your own laps!). As we started up the first hill a woman cut me off while passing
me. When we started down the first hill I passed her and glanced at her bib,
511. She was in my age group but I didn’t recognize her. On the next uphill
section, she passed me for a second time. It was my turn to pass her as we rounded
the last corner before the end of the loop. We went through the same yo-yoing on
the next two laps. By the fourth time around I was beginning to wonder what strategy
to adopt to beat 511. I didn’t think I could win a final stretch sprint. She
passed me halfway up the first hill of the last lap; but I hung on and put the
pedal down, passing her for the last time just before the top. I didn’t let up until
I crossed the finish line. I’ll be on the lookout for 511 at my next race.</span></div>

<span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Our 5K to benefit <a href="http://projectaidsorphan.org/" target="_blank">Project Aids Orphan</a> was pretty mush an impomptu affair this
year. Even though we didn’t get the word out too far in advance, and despite
the cold and wind, about 20 of us gathered by the lake last Saturday to run
for this good cause. After the run, we enjoyed some well-deserved pumkin soup and I awarded the
top finishers their traditional applesauce cake. Maybe next year I can get my
act together and organize a full-fledged race. It could happen!</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">With all the traveling I’ve done over the past few months, involving an
inordinate amount of sitting and eating (I may or may not have gained five
pounds), I didn’t have high expectations for <a href="http://www.trophee-lausannois.ch/Talent/" target="_blank">Saturday’s 12K</a>, my first race
since early September. Neighbor and I arrived at Chalet-à-Gobet an hour before
the 11 a.m. start. The 850 meter elevation made it noticeably colder than home.
Having dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, I hung out in the locker room to stay
warm and told friends about my latest trips. As has been the case most years,
the recent rain had made the course quite muddy, so I was wearing my old
beat up running shoes. The race was pretty much a repeat of <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.com/2012/11/forceton-talent-2012.html" target="_blank">last year</a> for me in every way,
except for running a good 2 minutes slower. Even though I hadn’t had high
expectations, I was disappointed. When I got home, I compared the two
races on Garmin Connect and was relieved to see that <a href="http://connect.garmin.com/activity/402142470" target="_blank">this year</a>’s course was 300
meters longer than <a href="http://connect.garmin.com/activity/241970702" target="_blank">last year</a>’s and that my splits were almost the same.</span>

</style> <span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">On the first morning of our 10-day trip to Israel, I asked at the
reception desk which way to run. I was told to turn left at the end of the
drive and keep going till I got to the sea. Husband and I started down the wide
path boarded with fragrant flowers of all colors. I could tell that even if we
didn’t make it to the water this would be a nice run. We reached the beach
after 15 minutes and ran a short distance up the coast. We stopped long enough
to dip our hands in the sea and pick up a few shells. A woman we had just
passed asked us where we were from (we were wearing matching <a href="http://www.20km.ch/cms/index.php/fr/" target="_blank">20 km de Lausanne</a>
shirts) and if we were in Israel for a race. She said she could tell us all about
local races, as she was the head of the Israeli athletic association. I was
tempted to give her the shirt off my back, but I’m too self-conscious to run in
a sports bra!</span></span><br />

</style> <span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">I had hoped to run a race while in Fresno. Today’s <a href="http://thewascally.com/race-information.html" target="_blank">half marathon</a> seemed
to be my only option. But I was deterred by the 7 a.m. start clear across town,
the hefty registration fee (the price of new pair of running shoes), nagging
lower back pain and a stiff knee, a lack of distance training; and did I
mention the 7 a.m. start? Maybe I was also afraid I wouldn’t do well. Instead
of competing, I tested my fitness this morning by running 12K at half marathon
pace on an empty stomach and with no mid-run rehydrating. I was feeling pretty
good about that, and enjoyed the bonus of watching <a href="http://www.clovischamber.com/events/clovis_fest" target="_blank">hot air balloons</a> take off from
the Clovis fair grounds. Then about a mile before getting back home, I saw
runners with bibs coming toward me! They were running a 5K! Had I only known I
could have included the race in my long run. Judging by the field, I would even have
done quite well. To bad the race wasn’t publicized anywhere.</span></div>

found out that this was NOT an actual <a href="http://thecolorrun.com/" target="_blank">Color Run</a> as we had first thought, but a
fundraiser for the radiology students at the local college. There was a big
turnout; 500 people according to the Paducah Sun. We were told to line up,
runners in the front and walkers in the back. We ran at a leisurely pace because
Brother has a bad knee and, hey, this was a fun run. After the first color
station my t-shirt was still white, and I had little to show for
going through the second color station. Finally I actually stopped in
order to get hit, but the volunteers didn’t really have their technique down.
Oh well. A few hundred yards from the finish, Brother inexplicably started
sprinting. I thought, ok, and followed. After crossing the invisible
finish line I stepped in front of a runner to join Brother and Nephew. Said
runner, who Brother dubbed Spandex Girl, immediately confronted me for not
respecting the finishing order. She really had her spandex in a wad! How was I to know anyone was keeping track of who beat whom?! Later Brother explained
his sudden motivation to sprint: SG had no business beating us!</span></div>

While
waiting for the race to start I found a spot in the shade and visited with friends
I hadn’t seen all summer. With only about 150 runners, there was very little
pushing and shoving as we took off. Since the 3-lap course wasn’t the same as
last year I didn’t </span><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">quite </span><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">know what to expect. First we wound through the
village, then up a long hill in the fields. Everyone had hit their
pace by then and I found myself behind a group of four or five men who powered
up the hill ahead of me. At the top, we turned into the woods and started back
down. I passed the group of men and was enjoying the cool shade and
downhill running. But soon we left the woods and got back on the road into the
village with the sun beating down on us again. I grabbed a sponge at the aid
station and squeezed all the water on my head. I also downed a sports drink
before starting the second lap. I ran the second lap a minute slower, but still
yo-yoed with the same group of men. On the third lap the men never did pass me
and I even caught sight of T. R. She is a much better runner than I am, so I
felt pretty good about </span><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">finishing </span><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">only 20 seconds behind her. All in all it was a good race, even though I hope next year we can go back to running the whole course in the woods.</span><br />

<span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">For me, this Wednesday’s leg of the <a href="http://www.tourpaysdevaud.ch/index.htm" target="_blank">Tour du Pays de Vaud</a> was the
toughest and most disappointing. I knew that because of the heat I was likely
to run a slower pace and get left behind by the two women I unexpectedly beat
in Penthaz. That’s exactly what happened. G. L. passed me at the end of the
killer hill halfway through the course. I valiantly hung on for about a
kilometer, but that’s all I had in me and she slowly pulled away. Less than a
kilometer from the finish line, S. M. passed me too and I didn’t even care
enough to try to keep up. To add insult to injury, another women zipped past me
right on the line. I thought maybe she wasn’t in my age group, but when the
results were posted later I saw that she was.</span></div>

</style> <span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Last week during our vacation in the mountains we hiked or ran between
10 and 15 kilometers a day, climbing anywhere from 400 to 1500 meters. So I thought it would be
interesting to see if that was better race preparation than the meringues
and double cream of the two previous weeks! </span><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">But several factors made </span><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Wednesday evening’s <a href="http://www.tourpaysdevaud.ch/chavornay.htm" target="_blank">Chavornay race</a>, the third leg of this year’s Tour du Pays de Vaud, difficult to compare to the <a href="http://www.tourpaysdevaud.ch/penthaz.htm" target="_blank">Penthaz race</a>. Even though the distance was the
same (8.5K), there was twice as much climbing in Chavornay and instead of paved
roads, we ran mostly on gravel or dirt paths. Besides that I was in pain the
whole second half of the race. I don’t know if it was the not-so-ripe banana I
ate a half and hour before the start, or the few gulps of water I downed at the
aid station, but a side stitch slowed me down considerably. Even so, my pace
was only a few seconds slower than in Penthaz. So, not bad all in all. It's also impossible to compare Wednesday's race to my previous Chavornay runs because, unbeknownst to me, the course had been changed since I last ran it three years ago. We'll see next week if anything has changed in La Sarraz.</span></div>

</style> <span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Earlier this month I spent the better part of two
weeks eating meringues and double cream for breakfast, sitting at a desk all
day, and indulging in heavy restaurant meals every evening. After that regime,
I didn’t have high expectations for the first leg of the <a href="http://www.tourpaysdevaud.ch/index.htm" target="_blank">Tour du Pays de Vaud</a>
in <a href="http://www.tourpaysdevaud.ch/penthaz.htm" target="_blank">Penthaz</a>. But a few kilometers into the race I was surprised to find myself
running alongside, then leaving behind, a woman whose back I recognize well. I figured
I would lose steam and fall behind on the end of the hilly 8.5K course, but my
pace remained steady. I was very pleasantly surprised to hear the announcer say how well I placed
as I crossed the finish line. It was my best ranking ever in this series of
races! If only I had brought home more meringues and double cream!</span></span></div>

This year's <a href="http://www.midnightrun.ch/cms/" target="_blank">Midnight Run</a> was a lot like <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2011/12/2011-midnight-run.html" target="_blank">last year's</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Just when we were getting settled in at home after a busy Saturday, it was time to head for the starting line. But the mild temperature made it easier to get back out of the house. Husband and I warmed up by jogging to la Riponne where we joined the other 600 runners. At 11 p.m. sharp the gun was shot and we took off on the first of three 2.3K laps around the old city. Since my knee had been hurting for several weeks, I was a bit concerned about all the steep hills, slippery cobblestones and hairpin turns. But I felt no pain at all and was able to keep up a decent pace despite the lack of training recently. Even though each lap got harder and slower, I pushed hard till the end. I was met by a volunteer who congratulated me for coming in second among the +50 women. I knew who was ahead of me and was not surprised to see who came in third. The three of us were on the podium last year too!</div>

Knowing I could just discard them before going home, I packed my <i>old</i> worn-out Nikes for this trip to the States to celebrate Son 2's wedding. Over the past week I've run in four different States. Three States on consecutive days, that's something <i>new</i> for me. This morning I <i>borrowed</i> Sister's car and drove down to the <a href="http://www.hamburg.mi.us/lakelands_trail_state_park/" target="_blank">Lakelands Trail</a> to run. My <i>blue</i> Adidas windbreaker was fine for Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kentucky, but nowhere near warm enough for Michigan weather! </div>

didn't show up. We knew one couple was on their way, so we waited a few
minutes to give them time to arrive. But everyone was getting cold, so I
finally sent the 15 runners and 4 walkers on their way. I knew at least
one runner would be back in under 20 minutes, so I quickly got a few
things taken care of before going back to the finish line. Sure enough, <a href="http://bob-runner.over-blog.com/" target="_blank">Bob</a>
was right on schedule! Others started trickling in and told me they had
seen some of the "no shows" on the out-and-back course along the lake. Because of
different mishaps, a total of 10 runners joined the race in progress.
Most race directors will tell you to expect a certain
percentage of runners to drop out. I doubt many have ever seen their
field increase be 50% at the finish line! We ended up having about the
same number of participants as in <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2010/11/2010-one-world-run-lausanne.html" target="_blank">2010</a> and <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2011/12/2011-one-world-run-lausanne.html" target="_blank">2011</a>, so along with my wonderful helpers we had a nice little group for the awards ceremony, then pumpkin soup by the fire.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was pouring rain Saturday morning; but having signed up for the 11K <a href="http://www.trophee-lausannois.ch/Talent/" target="_blank">race</a> just north of town, I was determined not to chicken out. After picking up my bib, I waited in the locker room with all the other women who were discussing how they had strategically dressed for this weather. I said I was wearing a bright red shirt so that if I fell down a hill I would be easily found. Fifteen minutes before the start of the race, the rain stopped! I was familiar with the course that wound through the forest, partly on paved roads, partly on dirt paths; so I took off at a fast pace to avoid getting stuck behind cautious runners on the narrow downhill portion of the race. I overtook several young runners as I tore down the steepest and rockiest section. The second half of the course sloped gently uphill along the rushing stream. I slowed quite a bit as I always do going uphill; but surprisingly, very few runners passed me. The last two kilometers seemed interminable (mostly because the course was almost 12K instead of 11!), but I finished strong anyway. I didn't have time to hang around and mingle, so I jogged back to my car just as the rain started coming down again.</div>

This is not yet another post about the mayor of New York City cancelling the Marathon at the last minute after having announced two days earlier that it would indeed take place. (It's not even about today's election.) No, this is closer to home. At last year's <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2011/12/2011-one-world-run-lausanne.html" target="_blank">Lausanne One World Run</a> I promised that the 2012 event would be on a larger scale. But not knowing where to start, and with Son 2 getting married one week later, I could only muster the energy to maintain the 5K as it was the previous two years. (To my credit, I did find a local sponsor to pay for t-shirts so that Brother doesn't have to send them all the way from the States.) Oh well, it'll still be fun; so if you're in the area November 17th, come join us to support this <a href="http://projectaidsorphan.org/" target="_blank">good cause</a>. You don't even have to run; come walk it, or just encourage the runners and stay for a bowl of homemade soup. I may be worthless at organizing events, but I can certainly cook for a crowd!<br />

Saturday afternoon winter hit. We stayed home to eat our spaghetti instead of going down to Ouchy to share in the pasta party. Sunday morning we woke up to several inches of snow. The temperature was hovering around freezing and the wind was gusting. We felt sorry for all the 10K and marathon runners who were competing in the morning. The children's 2.6K and 4.2K races ended up being cancelled.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At 12:15 Husband and I met two running buddies at the train station to go to La Tour-de-Peilz on the last special train reserved for half-marathoners. From the train we could see marathoners struggling against the elements on their way back to Lausanne. Once we arrived at La Tour-de-Peilz there was still an hour to wait before our starting time. The four of us took refuge in the village church where parishioners had prepared snacks and hot drinks. We finally joined the ranks outside and waited for our third-wave start. We could see a 1:40' pacer just ahead of us, and a 1:50' pacer just behind us, but we were hoping to finish somewhere in between. Soon after we took off, we noticed a runner with a 1:45' sign pinned to the back of his shirt, so we tried to stay with him. About a mile into the race, I discarded my top layer of clothing; an old t-shirt. After another mile I took off my beanie and gloves and handed them to Husband who put them in his pockets. Soon the second disposable t-shirt came off. The temperature hadn't warmed up any, but I had. We were working hard to stay with the unofficial pacer, but just over half way he started pulling away. I was feeling a bit lightheaded and told Husband to go on. After that discomfort passed, I started catching up little by little. I was angry at the wind, which helped me push harder. Husband and I ran together again until he accelerated on the last kilometer to finish strong. Despite circumstances we were less than a minute off our target time!<br />

The unofficial 1:45' pacer is standing to the left in red and white. I'm wearing a bright orange t-shirt you can see from a long way away.</i></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This afternoon I spent three hours giving out race numbers for Sunday's marathon, half marathon, and 10K. I was at station Gm-Guk. While I was there I went up and down the line to pick up half marathon bibs for Husband, two running buddies, and myself. We still plan on going by tomorrow to visit the expo and get our free pasta. We'll need the energy for the race; Sunday's forecast includes freezing temperatures, strong winds, and maybe even some snow.</div>

Two months ago I downloaded a custom half marathon training plan from Runner's World's Smart Coach. I have not followed it at all. I've only done two long runs and absolutely no speedwork. There has been the odd fartlek (pardon me!), but mostly I've done tempo runs. With two weeks left to train before the <a href="http://www.lausanne-marathon.com/joomla/" target="_blank">half marathon</a>, I'm not going to get anywhere near that projected time on the plan. Oh, well, maybe I can fit in some mile repeats next week.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gotta run...</div>
stephrunshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01805745619741904671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7507417962536126982.post-46790165182208566432012-10-02T18:45:00.000+02:002012-10-02T18:50:23.924+02:00The luck of the draw<div style="text-align: justify;">
I suppose I'm luckier than most. A few years ago I won a race entry from our bank for the 20km de Lausanne, including VIP treatment. Last year the Marseille Marathon had a booth at the Nice-Cannes Marathon; I put my name in the pot and won an entry (but unfortunately I didn't cash in). Migros, the grocery store chain where I shop, is a big race sponsor in Switzerland and I won a Geneva Escalade race entry in one of their drawings last Fall. So when I read in the weekly Migros newspaper that 40 entries for the <a href="http://www.lausanne-marathon.com/joomla/" target="_blank">Lausanne Marathon</a> were up for grabs, I was feeling lucky and sent my name in. My free sign up came in the mail two days later. I had already planned on running the half marathon, which means I've saved 45 CHF (almost 50 bucks)! If only I was running the full marathon I'd be saving 75 CHF ($80)!<br />

Last Saturday I rode my bike over to Renens in the morning to pick up my bib and to sign up M. J. for the <a href="http://www.renens.ch/Course_pedestre/" target="_blank">10K</a> since she couldn't get there early enough to register. The second trip was for the race itself. I searched and searched for M. J., but in vain. I lined up with 300 other runners and we took off on the first of four 2.5K laps. I started off at presumptuous pace and was able to stay with the same group of runners for the first three laps. Then on the last lap I started fading. With one kilometer to go, a woman in my age group passed me, but I didn't have the energy to hang on. She beat me by 11 seconds. <a href="http://stephruns1958.blogspot.ch/2011/09/course-pedestre-de-renens-2011.html" target="_blank">Last year</a> I beat her by 10 seconds! I wonder if she's improved of if I'm declining... I looked for M. J. until I started getting cold (the weather conditions were perfect for running, but not for standing around in sweaty clothes), then I rode home. Daughter told me M. J. had called to say she got lost and the race had already started when she finally arrived. Fortunately, she was allowed to join the 5K walk instead. So I showered and got back on my bike to head down to Renens for the third time. I finally hooked up with M. J. and we hung around for the awards ceremony because there were some very nice raffle prizes, and because she had placed second in the 5K walk! I hadn't planned on this <a href="http://www.trophee-lausannois.ch/" target="_blank">Trophée Lausannois</a> event taking up my whole Saturday, but all in all it was good day.</div>

Husband was summiting Mont Blanc last Wednesday, so I was on my own for the last leg of the <a href="http://www.tourpaysdevaud.ch/" target="_blank">Tour du Pays de Vaud</a>. I took the train to Saint-Prex along with dozens of other runners. After talking with several friends outside the locker rooms, I made my way over to the starting line by the lake. The previous Tour legs averaged 900 runners, but there were over 1100 present for this 8.6K race and we were packed in like sardines. Fortunately the gun went off right on time and after 30 seconds of shuffling I was able to run freely. We left the village, passed under the train tracks, then under the freeway and ran along the wood before starting back downhill past the vineyards. Then came the boring part of the course along the train tracks. We finally turned back down to the lake, but the last kilometer and a half to the finish line was interminable. According to my Garmin, the course was 200 meters longer than the official distance. I was not psychologically ready for that, but I managed to hold on by keeping in my sights the same women who I had been following the whole way. She and I were introduced after the race by M. P., to whom C. B. had introduced me a few weeks earlier. Since M. P. and I hung around for the awards ceremony and raffle later, I had the opportunity to get to know her better. As I was leaving, I heard several people say they were sad for the Tour to end and that they would miss the camaraderie. I know what they mean.<br />
